How to buy a used luxury car in India without getting burned

Before the deposit, assemble four things: the car's identity, its history, an inspection you can question, and a written cost to put it right.

The deposit is a useful place to pause. You have seen the car, decided you like it and perhaps negotiated a price. Now ask yourself what you would struggle to explain if someone else examined the purchase tomorrow.

Who owns it? What happened between the service invoices? Which repairs are included in the price? What lets you withdraw if the inspection finds something material?

If those answers are still verbal, the buying decision is not finished.

Make a file before making an offer

Ask for the registration certificate, service records, current insurance details and the seller's authority to sell. Check the vehicle identity against the documents with someone qualified to do so. A convincing photograph of an RC is not the same as checking the actual car.

Start a simple chronology: invoice date, odometer reading, workshop and work recorded. Put unexplained gaps on a separate list. You are looking for questions to resolve, not trying to diagnose fraud from a spreadsheet.

A missing invoice might have an ordinary explanation. Ask whether a duplicate can be obtained, with the owner's permission. If it cannot, keep that period marked as undocumented. A later service does not fill in an earlier gap.

For transfer procedure, use Parivahan's ownership guidance and confirm the requirements with the relevant registering authority. Its normal-sale guidance distinguishes the seller's notification and the buyer's transfer application. Interstate registration, finance entries and unusual ownership arrangements need their own checks. Do not let a generic dealer checklist stand in for the route that applies to you.

At Classic Machines, we own the cars in our collection and help with finance, insurance, ownership transfer and delivery. For your purchase, put the agreed scope, charges and remaining steps in writing so everyone knows what needs to happen next.

Buy an inspection you can ask questions about

Agree the scope before booking. Will the workshop see the car cold? Can it inspect underneath safely? Will there be a road test, a diagnostic scan and a written account of anything it could not inspect?

A useful report distinguishes an observation from a conclusion. A warning light, a stored fault code and a confirmed failed component are not interchangeable descriptions. Ask the technician what was tested and what further work would be needed to reach a diagnosis.

The same discipline applies to paint. A repair declaration needs a location and an explanation. Ask to see the panel, available repair records and any relevant photographs. A repaint marker alone neither proves structural damage nor rules it out.

If the seller will not permit a reasonable independent inspection, there is no obligation to keep negotiating. You do not need to prove that something is wrong before deciding you have insufficient information.

Our companion piece, How we select cars and read their inspection reports, explains how to read findings without turning a score into a guarantee.

Use the viewing for the things a report cannot choose for you

Bring the people who will regularly travel in the car. Adjust the driver's seat for yourself, then check the seat behind it. Put your usual luggage in the boot. If an elderly parent will use the rear seat, give them time to try getting in and out.

During a permitted test drive, try the conditions you genuinely expect to meet: a parking manoeuvre, ordinary traffic, a speed breaker and a suitable stretch at road speed. Do not ask for aggressive driving to demonstrate performance.

Use the equipment, too. Pair your phone. Operate the seat controls, windows and air conditioning. Ask the technician to investigate anything that does not behave as expected rather than accepting a diagnosis from the sales seat.

These are buying checks, not a substitute for workshop safety testing. A car can pass an inspection and still be inconvenient for your daily life.

Turn "needs a little work" into a quotation

Separate the quotation into work required before delivery, work likely to fall due during your intended ownership, and optional cosmetic preferences. For each item, ask what evidence supports it, which parts are proposed, and whether labour and taxes are included.

Be specific about tyres and brakes. "We'll change them" leaves open the brand, specification, number of tyres and extent of the brake work. Record what will actually be supplied.

A service package also needs reading. BMW India's service information, for example, separates maintenance and wear-related scopes across its packages. The lesson is not that another marque has the same terms. It is that the phrase "service included" needs a document behind it.

Leave room in your budget for costs that are not in the asking price: inspection, insurance, transfer requirements and identified preparation. Obtain actual quotations. An online annual-maintenance figure cannot know what this car needs next month.

Write the close as carefully as the shortlist

Before paying, have the parties record:

  • The exact vehicle and the person or entity receiving payment.
  • The agreed price and what it includes.
  • Known disclosures, preparation work and supplied accessories or keys.
  • Whether a deposit is refundable, under which conditions and by when.
  • The remaining inspection, document and transfer steps.
  • When possession and the balance payment will change hands.

Check these arrangements with the relevant professionals where necessary. Do not transfer money to an unrelated recipient because a message says the accounts team requested it; verify payment instructions directly.

After delivery, keep the signed documents, invoices and transfer acknowledgements together. Follow up until the agreed administrative steps are complete. The photograph outside the showroom is not the last task.

There is still room to enjoy the purchase. In fact, resolving these questions is what lets you enjoy it without reopening the file in your head every evening.

When you browse the collection, choose the cars you would genuinely use. Then ask for the evidence on those cars. If the right example is not there, send a Private Search brief. Waiting for a suitable car is a decision, too.
